Danny Goetz
One of two Co-Captains of the Academy Under 12 Boys Little Professionals, Danny or "Goetzy" as his coach likes to call him, is a player who can change the game.  And he does.  On multiple occasions Danny shows the Leadership of a quiet captain.  He leads by example on and off the field.  His athleticism is well suited to the game, and he has trained at home developing technique.

This week he stabilized the midfield by possessing the ball and changing the pace of the game.  He contributed by scoring, assisting, and modeling what the professional soccer style looks like at this age.

Jonathan George

Jonathan is the player every team needs because he exhibits the qualities of bravery and loyalty, and he understands that teams require sacrifice.  His bravery was on display this weekend, as he had a wound on his knee that he kept covered between games.

Coach had not seen the actual wound until in between Game one and two when the bandage came off--see photo in Professionals @ Rio--SOSL Spring 201.  Nonetheless when the team was asked at halftime of Game two, "who can play in goal this half ?", it was Jono's hand showing up.

Many kids wouldn't have played with a wound that looks like what's on this kids knee, and Coach never applauds the idea of sending kids out who are too hurt to play.  However, the game can be played safely with a wound such as Jonathan's.

In fact, with courage and a dad or mom who knows how to apply a proper bandage, a player can contribute to the team when he is the only player who can do so.

It goes without saying we told him to let any ball by him that would make him go to the ground to make the save.  He started by flying across the net to stop a bomb from distance with his chest.

My only reservation of putting this kid in goal, is I lose him as a solid defender who can dribble out of pressure on the field.

While "Goetzy" has won this award before, this is the first time for "Jono" and for "Edson", but these guys all could be on this page just about every week for what they bring to the team.

Edson plays much like Goetzy in that they both possess the ball in the midfield and distribute in the attacking third.  Edson has begun to return to scoring form, as he matures in the Under 12 bracket. He finished at least two on Saturday.  His second goal was a first time finish from a cross from Academy Under 12 player, Sam Dispenza.

Dispenza was on the right flank and beat the defender by first accelerating with the ball down the line, then he attacked the rear leg of the defender by cutting across into the middle as the defender ran by...This is how the dribbler creates the time and the space to look up.

Dispenza did all of this perfectly, then he weighted the pass, which means he applied exactly the correct amount of speed and force to the pass to meet the run of his target player.

Edson was that player showing up in a well timed run at the top of the area to score a classic soccer goal...a goal that speaks volumes about these boys learning to play as a team.
