Learning Soccer Juggling in Steps

Learning Soccer Juggling

Soccer juggling not only looks cool, it improves a player's touch and ball control.  Juggling can also be a way to improve a player's overall striking technique.

The goal is to play a straight ball(oon) upward with a consistent touch every time. Notice these touches are about waist high, with the toe pointed, and the ankle locked.  Also the player flexes, or bends at the hips, knees, and waist.  She stays focused and moves with the ball(oon).

In Learning Soccer Juggling--with a Balloon Athens Soccer Academy Coach demonstrates the first stage in the process of learning juggling and striking technique.  This video highlights an important theme throughout the game of soccer, off the ball footwork.  Listen to the pitter-patter of quick steps in between touches. These are used to time your footing to meet the ball at waist level and to have proper support foot placement.

You can see the various parts--knee, head, chest--used to keep the ball bouncing or to push it back in front of you.

In Learning Soccer Juggling--with a Bounce--Athens Soccer Academy Coach demonstrates the second stage in the process of learning juggling and striking technique.

Here Coach uses a bounce to give him some time to prepare for the next touch.  Again notice the footwork as the ball is bouncing to get in place, to get in rhythm with the ball.

  • :24 Coach restarts with a dropped ball from shoulder height. This is one way to regain focus and control after some scrambled chasing of the ball. I use the focused restart to regain my composure and concentration. I use it to reset the rhythm.
  • :39 Coach sneaks in a few consecutive touches, with no bounce. This is a step in the process toward learning that technique. Notice the rhythm of the film...

  • 1:01 Coach demonstrates the final stage as you will begin to link 3, 4, or more touches in between bounces.

  • 1:14 Control is shaky and Coach is somewhat all over the frame. This is realistic to what you can expect when attempting to juggle in this fashion: moments of success and struggle. That, too is a pattern found throughout the game.
