UPDATED: Soccer Tips For Midfielders [WATCH THIS]

See the field in three sections in order to have an advantage on which decision to make regarding your placement and priorities with and around the ball.
Also the priorities change depending on whether your team or the other team has the ball.

1--Closest to goal is the defensive third. Here you need to provide support to the ball or to any opponent.

--provide marking in the gap in front of the attackers from the other team. On a throw in for instance, drift over to that side and try to win the ball before it gets to the attacker.  The other defenders should provide defensive cover behind the attacker, also known as goalside.

--provide outlet--look to move into position where a defender with the ball can pass to you. this is called open up a passing lane.  You should develop this skill in every minute you play.  This is the flip side of providing proper ball support.

--See yourself as the stopper to any ball making it its way forward to the other team's attackers. Work to Deny or intercept any ball going into the defending third.

--See yourself as the link between the defensive players on your team and the Midfield/Attack.
Push up to connect with attacking midfielder (about 15 yards and at an angle behind).

--Provide width to oppose the attacking midfielder when she collapses into your space.  If she comes back into your position on the left, move to the center to the right.

2--In the midfield third

--look to provide diagonal passes which split defenders and which your attackers can run onto.

--Dribble anytime you have open space in front of you and finish with a pass or a shot on goal.

--When in doubt chip balls over/behind the defensive players toward either corner flag.

3--Look to shoot for side netting using power or accuracy/  look to serve.
