Solosoccer Workout 1

SoloSoccer is a Train at Home video series from How To Soccer that allows the student to self-pace their learning.  Training at home will improve confidence with the ball, and is the quickest way to accelerate performance in the game.

Anyone can train at home. You need some flat space and a few objects to throw on the ground, then you and your ball can start to create magic.

How To Soccer is the web based tool Athens Soccer Academy uses to teach the game.  Subscribe to Athens Soccer Academy on You Tube to see the latest videos as they are released.

Learning these skills will serve players twofold.  Each skill has direct application to the game, so the player should raise their game performance. Also, training at home is part of a healthy athletic lifestyle.  These skills and this system models what athletes do to become the best.  Learn to Train at Home and the world is your...Cup.

SOLOSOCCER Session 1: The First workout incorporates two balltouch exercises, instep juggling, and dribbling through cones.

SOLOSOCCER SESSION 1

The List is broken down into nine (9) videos. Seven videos teach train-at-home skills and the final two videos show the entire workout.

Here is a guide to assist the student. Within the Session 1 List, you will find,

Two Balltouch videos: Balltouch incorporates key surfaces of the feet. Start slowly and work to have the foot surfaces properly contact the ball.  After some progress is made a rhythm can be established.  Pivot on the ball of the foot and with a slight hop between techniques.

1) SOLOSOCCER 1A: TouchWork Exercise 1:
Ball is drawn back with the sole of the foot and pushed diagonally forward with the outside edge of the foot.

2) SOLOSOCCER 1B: BallTouch Work
BallTouch Work: Ball is drawn back with the sole of the foot and moved forward

Two Juggling with the Instep Videos: Students may juggle a soccer ball already, but by learning medium high juggling with the top of the foot--the instep--, the student is honing their body form for a very specific soccer skill, the instep drive.  The instep drive is the technique used for driven balls, and is used to put full power behind a level and straight shot.

3) SOLOSOCCER 1C: Technical Juggling Demo Coach

4)  SOLOSOCCER1D: Medium High Juggling Student

Three Conework Videos: Dribbling through a small course of obstacles, such as cones, teaches pivoting with the ball.  The foot surfaces will be engaged to maneuver the ball through spaces between obstacles.  As the student gains confidence through the course, the train at home Coach can time the player.  Increasing speed and reducing spaces between cones are two ways to raise the stress level on the player. This should happen gradually.

5)  SOLOSOCCER 1E: CONECOURSE DRIBBLING

6)  SOLOSOCCER 1F: Conework student

7)  How To Soccer: SOLOSOCCER 1G: Conework coach

Training at home needs to become routine in order to show results in a reasonable amount of time.  Train every other day and within 2 weeks, the student should see improved times through the conecourse, and feel more at home with the balltouch work.

ASA wants to hear from you. How is training going at home?  What are your obstacles to success and what successes have you had?  Comment below or on the Playlist.

Under 6 Soccer: Learning to shoot a moving ball

Very young soccer players can exhibit incredible natural talent. The trick for the coach or the parent -coach is to create the environment which offers challenge and success.  In learning to shoot a moving ball, the student starts by kicking a ball at rest and progresses to shooting balls off a service.

There are a few key coaching points to keep in mind, but if the player has a natural rhythm and connection with the ball, like the player in these videos, there is no need to "overcoach".  In this series, we encouraged the player to run at goal, find the ball and shoot, then recharge the run and repeat.

These are some results.

Next we weight the service to make it stop as the shooter approaches.  The shooter has to align the run so that the hips face the goal.

Finally serve the ball at the end of the player's run so that the ball is moving diagonally across the player's run to goal. The support foot aligns next to the ball and the shooting foot finds the back edge of the ball. Shoot straight at goal, keeping the ball low.  Recharge the run and roll another service.  As the player gains skill and confidence the ball can be served in with greater momentum and a goalkeeper may be added, or a target placed in the goal.

Good Luck working with your child or your team.

Fun Run Number One

On Tuesday we arranged a special training.

The two Under 12 teams were going on a fun run with Coach Tad, while the Goalkeepers trained with Coach Kate from the Ohio University Club Soccer Team.

The group gathered at the benches.  The field players have been told to bring flats and that we will change into soccer studs midway through the session.

This is how the two teams arrange when told to sit quietly on the benches...

To the left we have the Lady Tigers Under 12 Team. scattered in the top-middle we have the Barnett Stars Under 9 goalkeepers, and to the right of frame sits the Little Professionals Academy Under 12 Boys Team.

They hit the ground to dress as a team: Tigers in Orange and Professionals in Green.  The Academy goalkeepers have gone to train with Coach Kate.

Now we are ready for some fun...we break into teams of two and arrange in a row on the grass.  Coach Tad arranges a demonstration of the task he has set for the teams.

In the background it looks like Kate has the Goalkeeper's attention...well done Coach Kate!

A mini-ball is given to the last runner in the row and the group has to accomplish the task of getting the mini-ball from the back of the line to the front and then to the back again without dropping the ball and while running.

They are told that there is some "penalty" in store for the team that drops it.  Who knows what we will come up with if that happens...

Stay to the Right>>>

As we get back to the grass, Coach Kate has the goalkeepers moving

Later Coach Kate retrieves Braidan's water bottle from the tree; then everybody is happy.

A Big Thanks to Coach Kate!

We will return to standard training for Thursday of this week and Tuesday of next week, and NEXT THURSDAY  we will have GOALKEEPER TRAINING #2.

SOLOSOCCER: Spring Training Series

SOLOSOCCER SPRING TRAINING SERIES

What is SOLOSOCCER Training?

SOLOSOCCER is a self-paced, learn-at-home soccer skill series for players, coaches, and anyone who wants to feel the health benefits soccer can offer.  SOLOSOCCER is designed for folks who want to train and get better at the techniques of the game, but lack the space, or the coach, or the community support to stick to the program.

The video series teaches technique and ways to improve balltouch.
SOLOSOCCER offers an on-line sharing community, communication and video interaction with the coach and the group.

I created SOLOSOCCER to offer people a way to train at home.  How To Soccer covers the individual player and team aspects of the game; SOLOSOCCER provides the individual player the workout to train at home 3 times/week.

Many of these videos have appeared in this blog as features, and here they are as originally intended for the SOLOSOCCER series.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Players need individual ball touches to improve.
Players don't typically get individual technical training in a team session.
So where are players going to learn
 How to train to improve technique?
How to train to improve balltouch?
How to train at home?
SOLOSOCCER 1B BALLTOUCH WORK
Who should consider SOLOSOCCER? Any player who wants to improve and any coach who wants to engage in new ways of teaching soccer technique. SOLOSOCCER is worth as much as you put into it. The series exists for you to see what to do to get better, but without regular active ball touches and focused concentration on the tips, it is hard to improve.
SOLOSOCCER 1C: TECHNICAL JUGGLING
Why: Improved technique and balltouch will change your game. Train-at-Home is convenient and cost-effective. Quality technical soccer instruction is hard to find, expensive, and may have you in the car when you need to be at home or want to be on the pitch.  A team experience is supplemented with a coach who can teach you the technical skills when and where you want to train.
Group: For members with a Facebook account, join our on-line SOLOSOCCER community.  Ask questions, seek advice, brag about your records, post photos, videos, or request follow-up video from Coach Tad.  Document your successes and struggles with the SOLOSOCCER train-at-home system.
Questions emailed to tad@athenssocceracademy or posted on the Facebook group, may result in follow-up video posts or a written response through email or the group.
How To Soccer: Dribbling Skills Improvement
  Dribbling Skills Improvement
In How To Soccer: Dribbling Skills Improvement, we see an Athens Soccer Academy Individual Training Student on his first run through a cone dribbling course; then we see him one week later, after practicing fifteen minutes every other day.
Can you see the Improvement in Rhythm between Week 1 and Week 2?
Conecourse dribbling was discussed in an earlier article, How To Get Better As a Player, Five Simple Ways.  Here we see its efficacy.
Player benefits to Conecourse Dribbling are improvements in ball touch, ball control, and confidence.
Coaching points are
1) Coach the support foot to land and pivot on the ball of the foot.
2) Coach the player to bend at the ankles, knees, and hips.
3) Coach the player to start slowly through the course.
4) After technique has begun to develop, then allow players to move through at speed.
 Here we see two more videos of players. In the first the player tends to touch the ball with his right foot. Coaches should encourage players to gain confidence with both feet by using them in situations like this.
 When we start to train, we create wide gates between cones and these become smaller and smaller, as we become quicker and quicker.
