Solosoccer Workout 1

SoloSoccer is a Train at Home video series from How To Soccer that allows the student to self-pace their learning.  Training at home will improve confidence with the ball, and is the quickest way to accelerate performance in the game.

Anyone can train at home. You need some flat space and a few objects to throw on the ground, then you and your ball can start to create magic.

How To Soccer is the web based tool Athens Soccer Academy uses to teach the game.  Subscribe to Athens Soccer Academy on You Tube to see the latest videos as they are released.

Learning these skills will serve players twofold.  Each skill has direct application to the game, so the player should raise their game performance. Also, training at home is part of a healthy athletic lifestyle.  These skills and this system models what athletes do to become the best.  Learn to Train at Home and the world is your...Cup.

SOLOSOCCER Session 1: The First workout incorporates two balltouch exercises, instep juggling, and dribbling through cones.

SOLOSOCCER SESSION 1

The List is broken down into nine (9) videos. Seven videos teach train-at-home skills and the final two videos show the entire workout.

Here is a guide to assist the student. Within the Session 1 List, you will find,

Two Balltouch videos: Balltouch incorporates key surfaces of the feet. Start slowly and work to have the foot surfaces properly contact the ball.  After some progress is made a rhythm can be established.  Pivot on the ball of the foot and with a slight hop between techniques.

1) SOLOSOCCER 1A: TouchWork Exercise 1:
Ball is drawn back with the sole of the foot and pushed diagonally forward with the outside edge of the foot.

2) SOLOSOCCER 1B: BallTouch Work
BallTouch Work: Ball is drawn back with the sole of the foot and moved forward

Two Juggling with the Instep Videos: Students may juggle a soccer ball already, but by learning medium high juggling with the top of the foot--the instep--, the student is honing their body form for a very specific soccer skill, the instep drive.  The instep drive is the technique used for driven balls, and is used to put full power behind a level and straight shot.

3) SOLOSOCCER 1C: Technical Juggling Demo Coach

4)  SOLOSOCCER1D: Medium High Juggling Student

Three Conework Videos: Dribbling through a small course of obstacles, such as cones, teaches pivoting with the ball.  The foot surfaces will be engaged to maneuver the ball through spaces between obstacles.  As the student gains confidence through the course, the train at home Coach can time the player.  Increasing speed and reducing spaces between cones are two ways to raise the stress level on the player. This should happen gradually.

5)  SOLOSOCCER 1E: CONECOURSE DRIBBLING

6)  SOLOSOCCER 1F: Conework student

7)  How To Soccer: SOLOSOCCER 1G: Conework coach

Training at home needs to become routine in order to show results in a reasonable amount of time.  Train every other day and within 2 weeks, the student should see improved times through the conecourse, and feel more at home with the balltouch work.

ASA wants to hear from you. How is training going at home?  What are your obstacles to success and what successes have you had?  Comment below or on the Playlist.

Shooting Straight

Set up a target such as a wide can to kick into, and train the ball to be straight and low to the ground.

As an Introduction to the body mechanics of kicking with the laces, you can start with

Here's a common and useful coaching tool I found last summer.

This type of can makes a perfect target for a soccer ball

Learning to kick a soccer ball takes time, concentration, and practice.  Practicing poor technique will lead you as astray as a ball played into touch.

You can learn to kick by straightening your approach, improving your contact, and continuing your follow-through.

Set up a target such as a round can to kick into, and train the ball to be straight and low to the ground.  You can teach yourself to kick with the side of the foot and with the laces.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is a series of videos of an Athens Soccer Academy Individual Training student in his second week.  At the start of the week 1 sessions, he had these things to change about his kicking style:
he was
  • approaching the ball from an angle and following through with his swing across his body,
  • making contact on the inside edge of his laces and further down than his sweet spot,
  • compromising power, and he was struggling to consistently hit straight balls of more than seven yards.
So we see him here in his second session, after we have learned to kick a ball straight into the air, as in  Player Perspective: Technical Juggling.  That is why it makes sense to start with that skill.
Today he starts to work on a straight approach and follow-through for balls on the ground.
Unfortunately a jackhammer is operating nearby and some of these videos sound like a construction zone.
Yet you can get the idea that a straight-on approach, clean swing, good contact, and a consistently straight follow-through at the target will produce a straight ball.
Shooting Straight 2
Here he is kicking into and through the buckets...
Shooting Straight 3
This student still has some things to correct, but he has come a long way in one week.  Next, he should remember to keep his toe down throughout the kick and begin to lean over the ball.
As he continues to train, he will begin to feel more confident and put more power into this kick.  One day he may drag his toe into the ground, and thereafter remember to bend at the ankles, knees, and hips.
For now he is developing a smooth swing with a straight ball coming off of it.
There is a learning dynamic at play between this boy and his ball.
As a coach I can instruct him to get better, but then all week long his soccer ball could stay in the bag, and he could grab it only next week as an after-thought as he runs out the door to come and start all over.
Shooting Straight 4
But this player loves the game; he is like many others around the world who will soon discover his sweet spot and how to drive a ball.  He has begun to unlock the mythical  Instep Drive.
This player will likely find much success off the field, and he has the tools to have success in his games.
As we can hear from the video, this player makes a perfect student as he is thinking about the activity he is engaged in.  He is paying close attention to what his body is doing and the results of the ball.  His intelligence will serve him well in this game, as will his dedication.
These are some of the traits that mark success....What are some of your favorites?  We at How To Soccer would like to know.  Send a picture postcard, poem, or video about what you think makes a champion for your chance to win a skillball Spring 2013.  All of the contact information is on the YouTube page referenced in this article.
Player Perspective: Technical Juggling
Training at home is the key to unlock the levels of individual skill.
Technical Juggling was explained in Learning Soccer Juggling In Steps.  As a player trains to learn this skill, she may struggle to find the precise moment to strike the ball.  The idea is to create a flat surface with the laces of the shoe by raising your leg waist high and flicking your knee to project the ball.
So when to step in?  At which moment do you engage with the ball?
  If we get to it too late, striking it too low will produce spin, and if the ball is below our knee, we will curl our ankle in order to create the surface to project the ball up.  Striking the ball below the knee is juggling, but we lose the technical tool of molding our striking posture and body mechanics.
Yet if we touch it too early, while it is still above our hips, then it will likely end up behind us; for it flies over the head easily.
Technical Juggling, when done well, creates a perfect form of bodily mechanics generating power.  So learning to juggle in this specific way is worth the hours spent chasing the ball.
What How To Soccer tried to show in the below video is the timing trick to technical juggling.  This video is fun to watch, but it did not capture the intended perspective.  There may be something to learn from this video, however, without a clear view showing the footwork, the timing will have to be explained.
Player Perspective: Technical Juggling
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • The player should keep in mind that the foot should present a flat striking surface
  • The player should lock the ankle and point the toe
  • The player should bend at the ankles, knees, and hips to achieve the posture
  • The player should strike the ball at waist height
  • The player should use a controlled touch sending the ball no more than 6 feet
  • The ball should raise straight up from the foot
  • The ball should have no spin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once the player has the weighted touch to send the ball about four feet, straight upwards every time, then the timing becomes easier.  You learn to engage when the ball starts to fall.  So you reach in with your next leg--because you learn to alternate and use both feet, as in everything--when the ball is at its highest point.
Remember that we can practice the body mechanics using a balloon. As we take our ball into the lawn, learning to juggle with a bounce is a strategic tool.  A bouncing ball may require you find a flat sidewalk or floor and that the ball is properly inflated.
In the beginning the touch is all over--part of the reason we use the balloon.  Yet this game holds many rewards to be unlocked, and there is always a higher level to which we can aspire to reach.  Training at home is the key to unlock the levels of individual skill.
Yet the core of this game is social.  In all things we do within the game of soccer, if we understand that the social aspect is primary, and anything we do with the ball is the flourish to a great outing with our talented friends on both teams, then we understand the Spirit of the Game.
How To Soccer: Dribbling Skills Improvement
  Dribbling Skills Improvement
In How To Soccer: Dribbling Skills Improvement, we see an Athens Soccer Academy Individual Training Student on his first run through a cone dribbling course; then we see him one week later, after practicing fifteen minutes every other day.
Can you see the Improvement in Rhythm between Week 1 and Week 2?
Conecourse dribbling was discussed in an earlier article, How To Get Better As a Player, Five Simple Ways.  Here we see its efficacy.
Player benefits to Conecourse Dribbling are improvements in ball touch, ball control, and confidence.
Coaching points are
1) Coach the support foot to land and pivot on the ball of the foot.
2) Coach the player to bend at the ankles, knees, and hips.
3) Coach the player to start slowly through the course.
4) After technique has begun to develop, then allow players to move through at speed.
 Here we see two more videos of players. In the first the player tends to touch the ball with his right foot. Coaches should encourage players to gain confidence with both feet by using them in situations like this.
 When we start to train, we create wide gates between cones and these become smaller and smaller, as we become quicker and quicker.
